what is a Barr body? what is its significance?
In mammalian female cells a darkly staining round body is attached to the inner surface of the nulclear membrane. it is called sex chromatin or Barr body after the names of its discoverers, Barr and Bertram. Normal mammalian females have two X-chromosomes out of which one remains in stretched state and is functional while the other becomes much condensed and deeply stained round body or a drumstick like structure and is known as Barr body. By analysing the left-out tissue, blood, etc. of a person  his/her sex can be identified. It is helpful for criminal investigation.
